An arrest that shook India-US relations, Devyani Khobragade Case when India and America came face to face. In this blog, we'll explore how the Indian government's response to the recent US strike on an oil tanker that killed three Indian citizens, without naming the US, has sparked a new debate. Following this incident, many have begun comparing the foreign policies of the current government and the UPA government. Critics and some on social media question why the current government appears to be avoiding naming the US in official statements even when Indian citizens died in US action. We will also try to understand why the Devyani Khobragade incident of 2013 is being recalled once again. At that time, the treatment of an Indian diplomat in the United States created unprecedented tensions in India-US relations. India took a strong stance against the United States, publicly registering its protest and taking several diplomatic steps.  Recently, due to the increasing tension b...

Is a major oil crisis looming over India?

Is a major oil crisis looming over India? Why did PM Modi suggest working from home? Is a major economic crisis imminent?

PM Modi's appeal increased the concern??

Amid rising tensions in West Asia and steadily increasing crude oil prices, an appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked a new debate across the country. PM Modi urged citizens to conserve petrol and diesel, use public transport, reduce gold purchases, and, if necessary, adopt a "work from home" model.

The Prime Minister's appeal comes at a time when the world is once again facing the prospect of a major economic and energy crisis. The ongoing conflict in West Asia is directly impacting the oil market and placing increasing economic pressure on oil-importing countries like India.

After all, why did PM Modi mention the WFH model?

Prime Minister Modi said that India successfully adopted the "work from home" model during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, if necessary, companies and institutions can consider this option again. The main objective is to reduce fuel consumption.

If people work from home instead of going to the office every day, then:

  • Petrol and diesel consumption will decrease
  • Traffic and pollution will decrease.
  • Pressure on foreign oil imports will ease
  • This will help in saving the country's foreign exchange reserves.

The government believes that small steps together can save the country's economy from a major crisis.

What appeal did PM Modi make to the countrymen?

The Prime Minister told the people that:

  • Use public transport where possible
  • Give priority to metro and electric buses
  • Adopt car pooling
  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Save fuel
  • Reduce the purchase of foreign products
  • Avoid buying gold for some time

He said that this is not only the responsibility of the government, but participation of every citizen is necessary.

Why is it advisable to avoid buying gold?

India is one of the world's largest gold importers. India purchases billions of dollars worth of gold from abroad each year. According to reports, India imported approximately $72 billion worth of gold in FY26.

When a country imports more gold, it puts pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Therefore, the government wants people to postpone gold purchases unless they are currently needed, in order to conserve dollars.

Is India preparing for a major crisis?

Experts believe that if West Asia tensions continue for a long time, then:

  • Crude oil prices may rise further
  • Petrol and diesel may become expensive
  • Inflation may rise
  • Import bill may increase
  • Pressure on the Indian economy may increase

For this reason, the government is already emphasizing on energy conservation and reducing imports.

Emphasis on “Vocal for Local” again

Prime Minister Modi once again called for strengthening the "Vocal for Local" campaign. He stated that if domestically produced products are used more, foreign imports will decrease and India's economy will become stronger.

PM Modi's appeal isn't limited to saving fuel. It's also being seen as a signal to prepare the country for the coming global economic pressures. Steps like working from home, public transport, carpooling, and using local products will not only reduce people's expenses but also strengthen the country's economy.

Now it remains to be seen whether the government takes some major decisions regarding energy conservation and economic security in the future or not.

What did the opposition parties say?

Every time they put the responsibility on the public: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi and some Congress leaders said that if the situation is so serious, the government should clarify the entire economic situation to the public. The opposition alleges that the government is only appealing to the public to save, but is not providing information about concrete steps to control rising oil prices and inflation.

Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, once again targeted the central government through a post on Monday. Taking a dig at some of PM Modi's statements, he said that the Prime Minister always shifts the responsibility onto the public. In the post, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote that on May 10th, PM Modi demanded sacrifices from the public: "Don't buy gold, don't travel abroad, reduce petrol consumption, reduce fertilizer and cooking oil, ride the metro, and work from home." These aren't sermons—they're evidence of failure. In 12 years, the country has reached a point where the public has to be told what to buy, what not to buy, where to go, where not to go. He shifts the responsibility onto the public every time to escape accountability. Running the country is no longer within PM Modi's power.
